TruDesign’s team recently stepped into the role of client while working with a different type of design professional, and we were able to experience firsthand what it’s like to be on the receiving end of some form of personal transformation. Stephanie Davies is a personal shopper in the Denver area that we were fortunate enough to work with on updating and elevating our personal style (much like you would hire us to help update and elevate your home!).

We know that having a designer invade your space can be an overwhelming experience. It’s difficult to hear that something isn’t quite working for your home, especially if you were the one to pick it out. While you reached out to us knowing your space needs help, it doesn’t make hearing it any easier. When you don’t have an eye for design it can be intimidating having a professional comb through your home, and we recently experienced this in our own homes- or closets, if you will. To say we were nervous would be an understatement, but it was something that we ultimately knew we wanted and were excited for.

There are a few takeaways from this experience that we thought were similar to how our clients may feel going through the interior design process:

  1. It’s Scary.

Having a personal shopper come into your closet is horrifying- we’re not going to sugarcoat it. Allowing anyone with a specially trained, critical eye to dissect any area of your life can be unnerving. I personally struggled with wanting to stash away items that I didn’t want her to tell me to get rid of, but isn’t that why I hired her? To candidly tell me what works and what doesn’t? Yes, it’s scary, that’s just a part of letting in someone and something new.

  1. It can be Challenging Mentally & Emotionally.

No one likes to let go of the belongings they associate with positive memories; however, letting go and making room for new and functional pieces will almost always leave you better off. When you open up your home to someone new it tends to leave you feeling exposed, like they’re there to make you feel uncomfortable and tell you everything you’re doing wrong. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Allowing someone in to help us in areas that we know aren’t our strong suit is such a sign of personal strength, bravery, and growth. Admitting you need help and then being willing to accept that help will transform you mentally and emotionally.

  1. But, most Importantly, It’s Worth It.

When you let a professional do the job you hired them to do the results can be above and beyond your expectations. There are outfits we shopped for that I would never have put myself in, yet somehow, they look like they were made just for me. Going through this process left me with a sense of confidence because I feel better wearing clothes that were picked specifically for me- from skin tone, to hair color, to body type. There are so many moving parts that go into creating a cohesive look in any design- whether it be clothes or interiors. When we finish your space, it will be wonderfully different and exciting but still feel like you. This process should leave you feeling that your choice to let someone in was worth it.

Side note: Design is never one size fits all; we walked away from this experience with looks that were a distinctly beautiful representation of who each of us are! Your home is the same, we will always honor what makes you who you are when creating your design.

Don’t let fear keep you from the space you always wanted! Like we said, it’s scary and challenging, but growth is always worth it.

We’re here for you when you’re ready.
